Did Print Tattoo Fail the Latest Temporary Tattoo Test?
Over the past few days, recent media reports about a test of temporary tattoos conducted by Greenpeace and the Upper Austrian Chamber of Labour have caused some uncertainty. Many of you have contacted us with questions.
We would therefore like to take this opportunity to provide full transparency: Print Tattoo by Stainer was not included in this investigation.
In this article, we explain exactly what this means for our products and why you can rely on the highest standards of quality and safety when choosing Print Tattoo.

To answer the most important question right away: Our temporary tattoos were not tested as part of the current investigation. Therefore, we did not fail the test, nor were our products assessed or evaluated in any way.
Temporary tattoos can vary significantly depending on the manufacturer, particularly in terms of origin, formulation, ingredients and production conditions. The test results cited in the media relate exclusively to the products that were actually examined and cannot be applied to all temporary tattoos in general.
Quality and Safety “Made in Austria”
Unlike many anonymous imported products, our temporary tattoos are produced exclusively in Austria. This allows us to closely monitor and control every stage of production and ensure consistently high product quality. Safety is our top priority—after all, our tattoos are applied directly to the skin.
You can always rely on the following when choosing our products:
Dermatologically assessed: Our tattoos are tested and dermatologically assessed by independent testing institutes, which confirm their skin compatibility.
Legally compliant: Our formulations strictly comply with the requirements of the European Cosmetics Regulation (EC) No. 1223/2009.
REACH-compliant: We meet and confirm compliance with all requirements of the European Chemicals Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006.
100% vegan: We use only vegan ingredients in our temporary tattoos.
What Has Changed in Our New Formulation Since March 2026?
We do not simply rely on existing certificates. As part of our continuous product development, we regularly invest in improving and optimising our products. Since March 2026, we have therefore been using our latest tattoo formulations.
We have deliberately gone beyond the already strict legal requirements and completely eliminated substances such as CI 11710, PTFE, talc and BHT from our formulations.
What Responsibility Do We Have When It Comes to Children’s Tattoos?
We know that temporary tattoos are especially popular with children. This makes us particularly aware of our responsibility. At Print Tattoo, quality, product safety and transparency always come first.
Legal requirements, new scientific findings and our own high quality standards are continuously incorporated into our product development and production processes.
What Is the Difference Between Cheap Imports and Print Tattoo?
At first glance—whether in a shop or online—temporary tattoos often look very similar. However, appearances can be misleading. Particularly with very inexpensive imports from the Far East, compromises may be made when it comes to quality and product safety.
The following comparison shows what this can mean for your skin:
| Topic | Cheap Imports | Print Tattoo by Stainer | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production | ❌ Unclear origin and long transport routes | ✅ 100% Made in Austria | You know exactly where and under which fair conditions your tattoo was produced. |
| Skin testing | ❌ Often no testing by independent laboratories | ✅ Dermatologically assessed | Independent experts confirm the tattoo’s skin compatibility. |
| Potential contaminants | ❌ Possible risk of heavy metals, plasticisers and low-quality pigments | ✅ Compliance with strict EU cosmetics legislation | The product complies with some of the world’s strictest regulations for cosmetic products. |
| Clean formulation | ❌ Often based on inexpensive standard ingredients | ✅ Free from PTFE, talc and BHT | We voluntarily avoid controversial ingredients and go beyond legal requirements. |
| Ingredients | ❌ Information is often missing or incomplete | ✅ Fully transparent and 100% vegan | You know exactly what is being applied to your skin—with no animal-derived ingredients. |
| Service and support | ❌ No direct point of contact for questions | ✅ Personal customer service in Austria | Our team in Austria is available to answer your questions directly. |
What Should You Look for When Choosing Safe Temporary Tattoos?
Production and origin: Make sure the product was manufactured within the European Union, where strict requirements apply to products intended for direct skin contact.
Independent testing and certification: Reputable suppliers have their tattoos examined by independent testing institutes and provide a complete declaration of ingredients.
Transparent communication: Be cautious when ingredient information is missing or no responsible contact person is provided—especially when purchasing products intended for children.
